Her original name was Miss Madeleine Slade; daughter of a British Admiral. She came to India in 1925 and became a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi who called her his daughter and gave her the name "Mira". She left India in 1959 never to come back, and died in Austria on July 20, 1982 at the age of 90.
